(MARRIAGE) Registration - An Overview
The marriage certificate is a legal document evidencing marriage that has taken place between a bride and a groom. A marriage certificate can prove to be useful while applying for many other government documents after marriage like PAN, Passport, and Visa. In this article, we look at the procedure for a marriage certificate in Delhi and the documents required and charges.
REQUIREMENT
- The Groom must be 21 years of age
- The Bride must be 18 years of age

- Two witnesses (Three in case of marriage through the Special Marriage Act)
PROCESS
- Once all the documents or photographs are ready, you will have to make an appointment.
- This appointment can be made online or by visiting the court in the relevant area.
Applying for Appointment Online: - Go to http: http://edistrict.delh govt.nic.in/
- Online click ‘Make Appointment with DM’ and register.
- Select your District and continue.
- Fill in the husband’s details and select ‘Registration of Marriage Certificate’.
- Fill in the Marriage Certificate form and select the date of appointment.
- Click on ‘Submit Application’.
- You would then obtain an acknowledgement page with the details of your appointment and instructions.
- There will be a link to a fully filled form on that web page.
- Take a printout of the Acknowledgement.

The following is the cost of a marriage registration certificate in Delhi:
- If the Hindu Marriage Act applies, the fee is INR 100; if the Special Marriage Act applies, the fee is INR 150.
- The fees must be paid in full to the District & cashier, and the receipt must be included to the application form.

When applying for a marriage certificate under the Hindu Marriage Act, all of the parties & paperwork are verified on the date of application, and a date for registration is set. Both couples, as well as witnesses who witnessed their wedding, should be present on the day of registration to fulfil the formalities.
THE SPECIAL MARRIAGE ACT GOVERNS MARRIAGES:
Following the submission of documents, both the Groom and the Bride must be present in order for a public notice to be issued, inviting objections. A copy of the wedding notice would also be posted on the office bulletin board, and a copy would be delivered by registered mail to both parties, i.e. the Groom and Bride, at the addresses provided by them. Registration takes place thirty days following the notice date if there are no objections. On the registration date, both parties and three witnesses must be present.
